BZS
serves as a network for contacts and information exchange, and brings
together individuals and organisations with wide-ranging interests
in development, education, health, politics, trade and investment,
travel and tourism, art, music and culture, community linking and
simply staying in touch.
The
main purpose of BZS is to increase knowledge, understanding and respect,
and to promote good relations between the peoples of Britain and Zimbabwe.
The Society was formed in 1981 not long after Zimbabwe's independence.
It expressed the need for a new relationship between Zimbabwe and
its former colonial power, based on mutual respect and equality.
BZS
is independent of any government or any political party in either
Zimbabwe or Britain, and our members represent a wide range of viewpoints
and opinions.
We are committed but critical supporters of Zimbabwe's independence.
We wish to see better relations between Britain and Zimbabwe, and
are concerned that serious historical issues and responsibilities
in that relationship remain to be addressed.
We encourage open discussion and debate about Zimbabwe, within an
overall framework of support for human rights and democracy, and a
more just and equitable world order. We seek to bring people together
and to keep channels of communication open across as wide a spectrum
as possible.
We
encourage support for creative initiatives by Zimbabweans on issues
of peace and justice, poverty and equity, knowledge and understanding,
in whatever sphere of activity it happens to be.
